APPROACH & RETREAT

Move toward / move away / repeat.

PRESSURE & RELEASE

Pressure - horse responds - release.

“Timing” of release is everything.

REWARD & CONSEQUENCE

Reward: horse attempts to do what’s beings asked = horse receives food / scratch / pat / verbal praise.

Consequence: horse moves into handler’s space on the ground, move horse in other direction to ensure safety.

DESENSITIZATION

Rider/handler systematically introduces “scary” objects.

Slow / gentle introduction: allow your horse to become comfortable over time (don’t hurry the introduction - take it at your horse’s pace).

Teaching your horse to not react negatively to “scary” objects will build confidence in your horse.

FOUNDATION

Basics: use building blocks in your training - ensure you and your horse master “A” before you move onto “B” and then “C” etc. - this will most likely change from day to day. Listen to your horse!
